Project Background
In the previously implemented project “Saving the Bird Paradise of Slovakia; Protection and purchase of Ostrovik meadow in Senne, Eastern Slovakia” realised from 1st December 2005 till 30th June 2006 Slovak Ornithological Society/BirdLife Slovakia purchased in two rounds, a total of 33.44 hectares of wet meadows, in Important Bird Area / Special Protected Area Senne covered by the grant from the Aage V. Jensen Charity Foundation. In October 2006 SOS/BirdLife Slovakia together with BirdLife International submitted another project “Further Purchase and Protection of the Ostrovik Meadow Reserve 2006” which was again kindly supported by Aage V. Jensen Charity Foundation.

With the financial support from the Aage V Jensen Charity Foundation SOS/BirdLife Slovakia purchased 39,3 ha of land during the project period. The total purchased area owned by SOS/BirdLife Slovakia at the Ostrovik Meadows site now exceeds 82 ha.

2008 was unique from the point of view of observing the effectiveness of newly created wetlands and artificial water surfaces at Ostrovik meadow at Senne village. Due to rich rainfall in the first half of year all new wetlands and water surfaces were soon flooded by water, which resulted in an excellent response of waterfowl to these new habitats during the spring migration and breeding season, when large flocks of ducks, waders and cranes visited the wetland system.

After the end of breeding season, in September we opened the sluice and allowed mowing of the meadow. During autumn season, from September till end of November all the meadow area was mowed, including the edges of wetlands overgrown by Typha, water grass and Carex species. Only smaller parts with Carex had been left unmowed to provide roosting habitat for Hen Harriers Circus cyaneus and Shorteared Owls Asio flammeus.
